Pro Bogey of the Week: Genesis Invitational Edition

Even the best players in the world make you feel better about your game. Here are the most relatable moments from Riviera — proof that the pros are bogeylicious too.

Pro Bogey of the Week: Genesis Invitational Edition

Welcome to the first ever Pro Bogey of the Week — the Bogeylicious series dedicated to the most relatable moments in professional golf. Because if a guy who hits 1,000 balls a day can chunk a wedge into the water, maybe your double bogey on the 7th isn't that bad after all.

This week: the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, where the world's best met one of golf's hardest courses — and sometimes the course won.

Why We Love Pro Bogeys

Here's the thing about professional golf: we spend all week watching these guys stripe 340-yard drives down the middle, spin wedges to tap-in range, and sink 30-foot bombs like it's nothing. Then we go to our local muni on Saturday and skull a 7-iron into the parking lot.

It messes with your head.

But every now and then, the golf gods remind us that even the pros are human. A short-sided chip that rolls back to their feet. A tee shot that finds the one tree in a 50-acre fairway. A putt that lips out, comes back, and stops six feet away.

That's the good stuff. That's the content your handicap needs to see.

Now that's Bogeylicious.

The Riviera Report Card

Riviera is the perfect venue for Pro Bogey content because the course doesn't care how famous you are. That bunker in the middle of the 4th green? It ate Tour pros for breakfast this week. The kikuyu rough around the 10th? It's thicker than your excuse for missing the company tournament.

Here's what to watch for (and we'll update this as the tournament unfolds):

The "I Do That Too" Moments

The Flyer Lie Special Riviera's kikuyu grass produces some of the nastiest flyer lies on Tour. Watch for approaches that launch off the clubface 20 yards past the green with zero spin. When a guy who practices flop shots for a living blades one over the green and into the gallery, that's validation for every weekend golfer who's ever done the same thing.

The Bunker in the Green (Hole 4) The 4th hole at Riviera has a bunker literally in the middle of the green. It's 236 yards long and plays into the wind half the time. When a pro — someone who's hit a million bunker shots — ends up in that thing and makes bogey, you're legally allowed to feel good about yourself for a full 24 hours.

The Short-Game Yips Riviera's greens are some of the most complex on Tour. Subtle slopes that look flat on TV but play like your backyard after a rainstorm. Three-putts happen here. Four-putts happen here. Pros standing over a 4-footer with the same look your buddy gets before missing one to lose a $5 Nassau? Chef's kiss.

The Mental Reset Failure Nothing is more relatable than watching a pro make bogey, then immediately make another bogey. We've all been there — the "let me just get one back" swing that turns a bad hole into a bad round. When it happens at a tournament with millions on the line, it's somehow comforting.

The Pro Bogey Hall of Fame: Genesis Edition

We're launching a running tally. Every week, we'll pick the most relatable pro moment and induct it into the Pro Bogey Hall of Fame.

Criteria:

  • Must be a moment that makes weekend golfers feel better about themselves
  • Must involve a player ranked in the top 100 (the better the player, the better the content)
  • Bonus points if the player's reaction is visible on camera
  • Double bonus points if it happens on a hole you could also bogey (so... all of them)

This week's inductee will be announced after the final round. Stay tuned.

Coming Next Week

Pro Bogey of the Week is a weekly series. Wherever the PGA Tour goes, we'll be watching — not for the eagles and hole-outs, but for the moments that prove even the best golfers in the world are, deep down, just as bogeylicious as the rest of us.
